This month once again The Spotlight shines on an area never previously illuminated: of course, we are talking about selective solder machine nozzle plates.
While point to point selective soldering is a very slow process, machines like the Ersa multiwave provide a much faster selective soldering solution. However, there is a specialized tooling requirement to make it all happen. The operation requires a custom made, dedicated nozzle plate that is designed specifically for a particular PCB.
Now, of course those specialized nozzle plates can be ordered directly from the manufacturer at a hefty cost and long lead time. However, if you are one of those who prefer less cost and shorter lead times, Pentagon EMS can provide them for you.
The photo links below show some other nozzle plate details:
Expansion Capability
Note the nozzles on the left and the plugs on the right. When this PCB becomes panelized, it is a simple matter to make a new set of nozzles and install them at the plug locations.
Hot and Cold Plates
The nozzle plate is supplied with a custom set of hot and cold templates. The function of these template plates is to check for proper thermal expansion of nozzle plate when heated, assuring a geometric match between PCB and nozzles during soldering.
